This Biological Science Technician is a full-time Term position, not to exceed one year and one day, and is located at the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Charlestown, Rhode Island.
This position may be extended up to a total of 4 years without further announcement.

U.S. Citizenship
As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) at the Rhode Island NWR your duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
Conduct surveys of Northeastern song birds (passerines), identifying them by sight and sound.
Conduct wildlife and avian censuses; make brood counts of birds;
Make observations of song birds, predators and other forms of wildlife;
Conduct nest checks and surveys, conduct vegetation evaluations;
Assist in the operation of bird banding stations, including mist nets, and banding of other wildlife species.
Provide work direction for volunteers, interns, temporary employees, etc.
Assist with habitat restorations including landowner contacts, GIS mapping, surveying, staking, construction monitoring, seeding, etc.
Assist in the preparation of management plans for restored areas.
Assist with performing biological studies.
Record data and compile information.

In order to be qualified for this position you must meet the following _SELECTIVE FACTOR_:
_SELECTIVE FACTOR:_ Y ou must demonstrate, through experience shown in your resume, that you possess skill in conducting surveys of Northeastern song birds (passerines) by both sight and sound.

In order to be qualified for this position, you must also possess one of the following:
A. A Bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study or at least 24 semester hours of study in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.
- OR - B. At least one year specialized experience comparable to the GS-04 grade level or higher in federal service, assisting with the implementation of wildlife population studies or surveys; conducting bird nest searches; recording scientific data in established databases or spreadsheets; summarizing data for inclusion in scientific reports; and utilizing various tools to maintain, repair, or protect wildlife and their habitat. - OR - C. A combination of experience as described under letter B above and education as described under letter A above which, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. (Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours may be used in this calculation). To calculate your percentage of education, first determine the total number of semester hours that exceed 60 semester hours (or your school's definition of two years of study), then divide the total number of your excess semester hours by 60 (or your school's definition of two years of study). To calculate your percentage of qualifying experience, divide your total number of months of qualifying experience by 12. Now, add the two percentages together. The sum of the percentages must equal at least 100%.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time or unpaid experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. You must be a United States Citizen to qualify for this position.

Skill in conducting surveys of Northeastern song birds by sight and sound.
Knowledge of bird habitat and capturing, handling, banding methods, and collection of morphometric data from birds.
Skill in leading biological technicians or volunteers and work as a member of a crew to collect field data as well as adapt to changing schedules and environmental conditions.
Ability to use global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technology to manage spatial data and produce maps.
Ability to gather, record, and collect field data for biological programs.
